If you have never had counselling before you may be a little unsure about what to expect. Counselling is a ‘talking therapy’ and the process allows people to discuss their problems and any difficult feelings they encounter in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. The term can mean different things to different people, but in general people seek counselling when they want to change something in their lives, or simply explore their thoughts and feelings in more depth.
There are many different types of counsellors. Some of my work is psycho-educational – that means I can offer information and education on some topics such as sexual problems or sex addiction, because in some instances it is simply a lack of understanding that is the cause of distress. I work with whatever my clients bring to the therapy room, this can be the issue that is causing immediate anxiety, or it can mean going back into the past and trying to gain an understanding of how what happened earlier on in life is causing a problem today.
